Trigger Point Therapy

Trigger points are small areas of chronically contracted muscle fibers. The resultant decrease in oxygen and fresh blood supply can cause a buildup of waste products and inflammation, presenting itself in the form of local and referred pains. Some common pain syndromes that can be traced back to trigger points include headache, TMJ, tennis elbow, shoulder, neck and back pain.

Trigger point needle therapy involves injection of small amounts of anaesthetic, coupled with the mechanical stimulation of the pathologically contracted muscle fibers. The result is relaxation of irritated muscle “knots”, restoration of healthy oxygenation and blood supply, and pain relief. Depending on the history and severity of the trigger point, a patient may require single or multiple treatments to achieve the desired and long-lasting therapeutic effect.
